Suriname becomes the 67th country to ratify Convention No. 102
Suriname has become the 67th Member State to have ratified ILO's landmark Convention No. 102, which sets the minimum standards and core principles for social security.
6 December 2024
On the 28th of November 2024, the Government of Suriname submitted the instruments of ratification for the Social Security (Minimum Standards) Convention, 1952 (No.102), Labour Inspection (Agriculture) Convention, 1969 (No. 129), Minimum Wage Fixing Convention, 1970 (No. 131) and the Maternity Protection Convention, 2000 (No. 183) to the International Labour Organization.
These ratifications reinforce the government's commitment to social justice and workers' rights through engagement in decent work and align with the outcomes of Suriname's Decent Work Programme for the country. For social protection in particular, the ratification of Conventions Nos 102 and 183 will help strengthen the country's social security system and also demonstrates commitment to ensuring comprehensive protection for its people.
In remarking on this historic ratification, Steven MacAndrew, the Minister of Labour, Employment Opportunity and Youth Affairs, said the “ratification of Convention No. 102 by Suriname marks an important step because the government can now be guided by the standards set out in the convention as it moves forward with the strengthening of the social protection framework in Suriname, including the implementation of the approved National Social Protection Strategy.”
Convention No. 102 is considered a global reference for the design of comprehensive, rights-based, sustainable and adequate social protection systems. Its ratification and application can strengthen the national social protection system and is also an important step towards the realization of the human right to social security and the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular Sustainable Development Goal target 1.3 on implementing social protection systems and measures for all.
The ratification of the Social Security (Minimum Standards) Convention, 1952 (No. 102) will enter into force in November 2025. This new ratification edges the ILO’s Global Ratification Campaign on the Social Security (Minimum Standards) Convention No. 102 closer to its target of 70 countries ratifying by 2026.
