Three-Day Seminar in Chisamba, Zambia, on ILO Social Security Standards

A three-day capacity-building seminar on the Social Security (Minimum Standards) Convention, 1952 (No. 102) was held last week in Chisamba, Zambia. The event brought together over 50 participants, including government, employers, workers, social security institutions and civil society organizations from Malawi and Zambia.

The event was organized by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Country Office for Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique and the ILO Social Protection Department in Geneva with financial support from the Irish Aid Regional Programme and the United Nations Joint Programme for Social Protection in Zambia. This initiative is part of the ILO's Global Ratification Campaign to promote the ratification and effective implementation of Convention No. 102 and other up-to-date social security standards.

The seminar raised awareness and enhanced the participants' capacities to design and implement sustainable, comprehensive, and rights-based social protection systems in line with the principles and benchmarks set out by Convention No. 102 and the Social Protection Floors Recommendation (No. 202), 2012.

This capacity-building activity marks a significant step towards enhancing social protection frameworks in Malawi and Zambia, promoting comprehensive and adequate protection throughout the life cycle.

During the seminar, the tripartite constituents developed and agreed on country-specific roadmaps to promote national engagements to strengthen their national social protection systems, with a view to each country ratifying Convention No. 102 in the future.
