Towards universal pension coverage in Mexico
Summary
This new Pension watch briefing explores the recent expansion of pension coverage in Mexico. In 2001 Mexico City introduced the country’s first social pension - since then 16 of Mexico's 31 states have also introduced social pensions and so has the federal district. This has brought coverage to from 22% in 2000 to 88% in 2013. This briefing looks at the situation before social pensions were introduced, tracks the rise in coverage and finishes by suggesting some areas for improvement. This blog gives a short overview of the research.
