Summary

More than 60 per cent of the world's workforce is working in informal employment (ILO 2018). A large majority of these workers face decent work deficits and are part of the 71 per cent of the world's population with little or no access to social protection (ILO 2017). For most of them, the lack of social protection is both a cause and a consequence of informality.
